Three Milled Sweet Milk Soap
Three Milled Sweet Milk Soap
In the 1700’s, soap was a luxury as was a bath. Most soaps were boiled with fats and lye. Starting in France, a new type of soap emerged. Triple Milled Soap was made by passing thrice though rollers (now made of stainless steel usually). The finished product resembled a smooth paste fashioned into soap.
Each time the soap is milled, extra moisture is squeezed out. Done incorrectly, you produce a dry lump. Done well, the soap is moisturizing, smooth and very hard (long lasting and not squishy).
When making soap from scratch, by hand, a procedure called re-batching can occur. The soap maker may even present them as French Mill Soaps; this is impossible unless the stainless steel rollers are used. Our 3 Milled Soap is not French Milled. We are a small company with very limited resource. We use a rag and strainer to get the liquid out, three times. After the moisture is squeezed, our soaps also become hard and heavy. We never use a dye in these soaps. We occasionally scent them with essential oils or herbs.
We use different standard moulds for these soaps as well. I think the product resembles biscotti. The soap always dries a shade of brown. We do not stock these soaps all of the time. Due to the intricate and time consuming procedure, we try to make stock for special holidays.
